Piano Tuition of an Unconventional Sort

I ought to be frightfully candid from the outset: I am not a qualified teacher. I possess no certificate, no pedagogy diploma, no letters after my name proclaiming expertise in the instruction of others. What I do possess, however, is a rather firm conviction that the traditional approach to piano tuition has got things somewhat back to front.

Consider, if you will, the curious case of the lapsed pianist. We all know the type — diligently passed their grades as a child, could rattle off scales and arpeggios with mechanical precision, and then, upon reaching adulthood, never touched a keyboard again. The instrument became furniture. Meanwhile, the self-taught dabbler — the one who learnt a tune by ear in a pub, who picked out melodies from the wireless — that fellow plays until his dying day. There's a lesson in there somewhere, I fancy.

Coaching, Not Instruction

My approach, therefore, is less instruction and more coaching. I shan't stand over you with a metronome and a disapproving expression. Rather, I aim to help you discover how you learn best. Some ears take naturally to copying; others prefer the printed page; still others learn by watching fingers move. There is no single correct method — only the method that works for you.

What I offer is guidance in becoming your own teacher. I shall point you toward the finest resources the modern age provides, help you develop genuine musicianship (not merely the ability to decode dots on a page), and generally assist you in cultivating a relationship with the piano that lasts longer than your enthusiasm for New Year's resolutions.

An Honest Proposition

This is, I confess, something of an experiment — unconventional tuition at a reduced rate, offered to adult beginners willing to take an unorthodox path. If you've always fancied playing but found conventional lessons rather stifling, we might suit one another admirably.
